September 17: Red Tent Moon in Virgo

imagesThe coming New Moon will meet us in the earthy sign of Virgo (on September 19th). Unlike what most people think, the Virgin as a symbol for Virgo refers to an independent woman who is responsible for herself, and is also associated with the archetype of the High Priestess.
With Virgo comes perfectionism, love for details, and a chance to create sacred space for yourself. We will dive into these topics and strengthen the trust in our internal guide and healer, our intuitive abilities, inner voice, gut feeling, or whatever else you want to call it. We will reflect on how we can serve others in a healthy way, and where we may over-commit. Also it’s a time to take extra care of our body temple, creating new healthy habits, and setting goals for our well-being.
Come to celebrate yourself as independent and self-responsible women.

June 25: Red Tent Moon in Cancer

crab-composite2The next Red Tent will be themed by the New Moon in Cancer, which actually occurs on June 23rd. Cancer is a water sign and brings deep emotions up to the surface that need to be released. This is why we will focus this Red Tent on taking our time to retreat, self-nurturing, and harmonizing our home and relationships.

This New Moon also falls in the time just after the Summer Solstice. We will reflect on what has happened over the passed 6 month, what we want to keep nurturing in our life and what we want to pass over to the great river of time.

What is a Red Tent Women’s Circle?

In many ancient traditions throughout the world, the Red Tent or Moonlodge was a place where women would gather each month to meditate, share their experiences, support each other emotionally, and honor their sacred feminine cycles. The Red Tent was a mystical gathering where women would be initiated into Women’s Mysteries, shared and passed down knowledge that was otherwise unspeakable. Young girls would learn about their fertility cycles, the relationship of a women’s cycle with the moon and the natural cycles of the earth. The Red Tent provided a safe space to learn and teach what it means to be a woman, how to harness the innate mystical powers that lie in a woman’s womb, how to heal and live in harmony with the earth.

Nowadays, much of this knowledge is still unspoken and a lot has been lost when women stopped gathering in circles. That’s why a new Red Tent Movement was started by several different women and groups all around the world. Many women, like myself, feel that there is this secret knowledge that has never been passed down to us, and we seek to learn and share whatever we can. I am part of the new generation of women who want to bring some of that old tradition back, and create new safe spaces for women to explore and share what it means to be a woman. Many new circles are born and reflect the need for women’s wisdom in this world.

The Red Tent Circle holds the intention of healing and transformation for each individual woman, but also for the sisterhood and the greater collective. We gather at the time of the New Moon, when our energy turns more inward (it also used to be the time when most women menstruate) and when we feel a greater need to rest and nourish ourselves. This is a time for deep reflection where we focus on our inner needs, let go of the old and set new intentions for the coming month.

I understand and guide the Red Tent as a place where each woman gets to see, hear, and experience herself as the main source of inner wisdom. In my view, all we need to know is already inside us and just needs to be allowed to be expressed. Therefore the main focus of these circles is to dive deep into our intuition and to learn to connect with our inner guidance. Also, the Red Tent is a place to share experiences, talk about things that might still be unspoken outside the circle, and learn from other women. This is why we seek to establish a safe space that is free of judgment, competition, comparison, and the confinements of our society. We meet eye to eye and heart to heart, listening to each others stories, sharing visions, wishes, and dreams, as well as fears and troubles. The focus of the circle is to help each woman grow to her full potential, in her own way and pace.

What do we do in the Red Tent?

There are many different ways to do a Red Tent Circle, so here I will describe my personal approach to guiding the circle. I was trained to lead circles by an Australian woman named Tanishka (themoonwoman.com), who is a writer and teacher of women’s mysteries.

The circle experience that I want to facilitate is very much focused on helping each woman to tap into her own unique wisdom and intuition. Therefore I work a lot with guided meditations, writing and art exercises, and setting personal intentions. Another central element is the Sharing Circle, which I actually call the Listening Circle, where each woman speaks from her heart, meaning that she can say anything and will not be judged, analyzed, or commented by the other women. This is the part of the circle that honors each individual story, it allows each woman to get into the places where she is most vulnerable, and to freely express what might be hidden or suppressed in everyday life. The other women are merely there to witness, protect, and support her during that process of self-exploration and expression. Each woman gets time to basically talk to herself, hear her own experience spoken out loud, find her own blockages, and create her own solutions without any interference. The goal of the circle is not to fix anyone or to lament and explain your problems to others, but to openly go inside yourself and look at what is there, then to express it and to go on a self-healing path from there.

In addition to these self-explorations we will chant together and have a ceremony to honor the elements and the powers of the moon. The chanting is another way to go deep inside yourself, it helps to experience and open your own voice, and clear blockages that you might have in expressing yourself freely. Many of the chants that I work with are mere sounds, repetitive and quite monotonous, they help the brain to stop thinking for a moment, they are active meditations, and can induce a trance state in which you will experience how your own voice makes your whole body vibrate. Hence, the chants are not meant for an audience, but for the inner ear.

The ceremonies that we will perform, to me, represent a way to re-connect to the knowledge and guidance of those who walked this earth before us, and to also get in touch with the natural world, the elements, earth and skies. Each Red Tent Circle has a broad topic that corresponds to the astrological sign of the New Moon, and will be reflected in meditations, chants, ceremony and the different exercises (so when the moon is for example in Cancer, we will explore water themes, emotional needs, and how to create more harmony in our lives). My overall goal is to allow you to align with your own moon cycle as well as the greater natural cycles, to help you strengthen your intuition, gain trust in your inner wisdom, and to help you connect to other women in a deeply healing way.

After the circle we will reserve some time to share food and to just mingle, chat, and to get to know each other in a more casual way.
